What do you love? – Google shows heart

A night quickie for the weekend (pretty late already over here in Thailand): Google just launched a new and fun search service: What do you love? It is not totally perfect (as you will see in the short video) but quite a nice idea though. Give it a try and spread the love! After entering the thing or person (this is where it lacks a little. Shows quite some funny suggestions that make sense for things but not for persons) you love google takes you to the following screen showing you results from all different kind of google services. Google Earth, Pictures, Maps, Blogger, Groups, Translate, etc…. Nice and intuitive handling like most times with google products. It updates automatically (and even changes the order of the search boxes when you do a new search) and lets you browse your favorite categories at your convenience. This might not replace other search modes or engines but is a nice way of showing off uhm showing what services google offers for search. Furthermore it is a nice way to find new services or services you already forgot about and in some cases it even might bring results onto the daylight that you [...]

If you smell…what WWE is rocking. Social Media role model.

A post about Social Media & WWE. Two of the things I like very much. Already love it. For those of you who do not know the WWE: WWE stands for World Wrestling Entertainment and it’s basically a good choreographed, action packed, ‘super athletes compete in fake beatings’. To make it short: It’s a big show and a billion dollar industry in the states. WWE airs the two most watched tv series in the states (Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown) and it’s only reasonable for such a company to take on social media. While WWE Superstars (that’s how they call their athletes/actors) participate in Social Media for quite a while already (The Rock or John Cena have some of the biggest fanpages and followers in the whole entertainment industry) WWE now takes it even a little further. When you enter the (very nice) URL www.wwe.com/social into your browser and hit enter you will be taken to the Social Media Hub ‘WWE InterAction‘ of the WWE. This hub combines twitter, facebook & the website chat in one place. It also lets you browse through each of those services individually. It pretty much combines all WWE mentions from twitter (via [...]

Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V | Social Network competition

During the last few days facebook rolled out some new features, adjustments and improvements or whatever they want to call it. For te ease of use lets just call it googleplusthings. Wait! Before you leave because you think this is just another facebook bashing, google plus is better, fanboy post. It is not! Most of my social media contacts praise facebook’s latest adjustments and see great possibilities in it’s new features (subscribing, listing, googleplussing). Nevertheless there also are ‘experts’ who doom facebook for totally copying google+. I have two points to add to this conversation. First I have to say that facebook does have some nice new features and ideas. In my opinion those are not the prominent featuring of lists or the stalkin subscribing though. Instead of those copy cat features I like the stuff that is, right now, facebook’s own. Example? Sure. This little box appears once in a while and shows you what you posted on a very date exactly one year ago. Nice idea, nice implementation, fun for users. Well done! Besides that facebook also added the ‘see how shared content’ feature. This is the first kind of google+ copy. Nevertheless facebook added some own ideas [...]

the open mouth unsexiness

Welcome to another post in my still not publicly available category “getting old stinks”. After covering a problem that might happen some time far far in the future and talking about cheap hair retention shampoo marketing strategies and the gate to hell today we will face another ugly fact that hits everyone of us when maturing (does this really sound better then getting old?): The open mouth unsexiness. It already occurred to me quite some time ago but – like with all bad habits that one develops – I successfully ignored it until last saturday when I went on a long bus trip with some of my students. Nice and polite how they are they reminded of me of that weird, strange and ugly fact that aging still hits me from time to time (even though I still do not like that! of course!). The last reminder was picture on my facebook wall that showed me sleeping during a bus journey…with open mouth! Damn it. Now it is official. I am old. I sleep with open mouth. Since the biological explanation is quite obvious and it is very common those points do not make it any better. The fact that [...]

Learnable – Ordinary people, extraordinary knowledge | Review

A few days ago I stumbled upon an interesting e-learning platform. On learnable.com there are “ordinary people” giving courses in things they are good in and for what they have a passion. So learnable turns the everyday normal guy into a teacher. Right now I did not take a course so I am not sure about the quality standard so far, but nevertheless the idea behind it seems quite interesting. Learn – take courses When you try to widen your knwoledge or digg deeper into some of your favorite subjects, learnable offers a great variety of courses. The biggest variety – due to learnable.com’s roots – is still the technology area. Nevertheless topics like “business” and “lifestyle” are closing up. Courses are structered in different ways (up to the teacher) and can be completely in text, with videos or other media attached, completable in one rush or with interactive assignments and consecutive lessons. The courses are, of course, not for free. The prices I saw so far reached from 15$ to 30$ per course. Every course (at least those I checked) has an introduction (e.g. video) so that you can gain a short overview over the topic and gain a [...]

Google Plus is not Facebook!

Actually I stopped blogging about recent hypes and stuff that is cool just at the very moment since I think there are many platforms out there that cover all the new fancy things, there is no need for my humble little opinion (or to say it like a friend of mine “there are enough smart asses out there, sometimes you need to keep yours in”. Nevertheless I decided to let it out again. Since Google Plus raised some questions among my friends and clients here my point of view about current discussions. One of the most common discussions right now: Will Google Plus be a Facebook killer? I say, obviously, no! Not that Google Plus does not have a lot of potential, but it takes a LOT to kill well established brands and services. Just take a look at the current social media scene. Sure Facebook is the biggest network right now but there still are a heck of other networks (hi5, netlog, badoo, myspace…) out there that simply won’t die. So Google Plus is going to be a major facebook ass kicker, but no killer. Remember….don’t be evil! It is not only about facebook & friends The thing about [...]

Facebook announces Videochat and Groupchat – lame news

So today facebook had a product announcement for all of us social network fans and freaks. One week after Google+ rocked our social media world facebook was expected to try to close the gap and pull out video chat. And well…the obvious happened. During an extremely boring (man, someone please give Mark Zuckerberg  an introduction in presentation skills…or a copy of a Steve Jobs Keynote) presentation Zuckerberg announced video chat options for facebook (powered by Skype), a new group chat and a new chat design. Text chat The news about the current text chat are that you are now able to chat with group members instantly. According to Facebook 50% of all users use groups. I am not quite sure if this really is true since none of my friends uses these – quite often spammy – ‘innovations’. But nevertheless, that’s a new feature. Furthermore the chat design gets an update. It should be easier now to talk to your facebook friends and to see them all at once on the right hand side in a sidebar. Awesome…..#ironic Video Chat Yeah…the BIG news everybody expected today. Facebook now offers video chatting powered by Skype. So if you go on a [...]

Stage 32 – Fade in to a Social Network for creatives and artists

The other day I stumbled across a ‘new’ social network. It focuses on creatives and artists and aims on connecting both. It’s called Stage 32 and uses the slogan ‘fade in’ to stay in your mind. When signing up you’ll be asked to enter your name, location, age and profession (comedian, artist, director, etc…) so that Stage 32 can later show you interesting people in your sidebar. Once you’re all set you can share pictures, galleries, videos, screenplays or your resume to attract and find like minded or interested people that are looking for work or artists with whom to work together. The lounge is the place to share current projects and ask for things you need for your production, promotion or whatever is on your mind. Kinda the craigslist for creatives and artists within Stage 32. The sidebar here shows current categories and the amount of discussions that are going on. You can join them or post your own project of course. The updates section then shows, surprise, updates from your network while the buzz section shows current buzz from throughout the web regarding all things creative. Furthermore there is also a active blog being maintained that covers tips [...]

Teaching Diary: English Communication Scavenger Hunt

Once more a hands on post about something I tried in class this term. The first time ever that somebody over here tried to pull an ‘interactive’ game off so it wasn’t that easy to get the people involved but in the end it worked out. Not perfectly, but still funny and with the desired outcome. So get ready for the first ever Udon Thani Vocational College English Communication Scavenger Hunt (EC|SH). So here are a few steps explained. Maybe it’s some inspiration, maybe you simply see what traps are awaiting you when planning such a game or maybe it even scares you off. However I thought the experience is worth sharing. Intention: Many colleagues asked me ‘why are you doing this? It’s to much work..’ – The simple answer: I think it would be fun and I want students to use their shyness when it comes to English communication. I want them to be able to use English in every day life and in all different kind of situations. Initial Situation: I told all classes they have to form teams who participate in the game. Then I told them that the game will start on a fixed date at [...]

Degrees of Happiness – the balance is the key

The other day I came across a quote by the Dalai Lama on Facebook (yeah, somehow I did not find him on Google Plus) and considered it as pretty straight to the point and well said. He talks about different degrees of happiness and that it is essential to find the balance between those differences. Before going to much into the analytics part, lets check out the quote: “We have different degrees of happiness & different kinds of suffering.Material objects give rise to physical happiness, while spiritual development gives rise to mental happiness.Since we experience both physical and mental happiness,we need both material and spiritual development. This is why,for our own good and that of society we need to balance material progress with inner development.” I’ve always been a big fan of the Dalai Lama and since seeing him live back then in Sydney I felt even more convinced that he is one of the few people that really are worth listening to every single time. Sometimes he says quite obvious things, sometimes quite thoughtful things, sometimes a mixture of both and sometimes things that simply have to be said but it never feels like it is a religious thing but more [...]

my first days with Google+

So the first few days of hectic testing, screaming and craziness are over. I finally had some time to sit and think about the first impressions of Google’s latest and final run into the social network field. And Google+ (say: googleplus) started with a bang! Right now it is still closed and only for some people open (lucky me) but it will roll out constantly. Here are my first thought and impressions on big G’s latest toy.   The better facebook The headline says it all. Almost everybody I spoke to on or about Google+ was impressed by google’s latest blast against facebook. It is fast, easy to handle, intuitive and has some incredible easy and yet powerful features implemented of which you think after seeing them “why didn’t I miss this on facebook?” Circles of trust The main difference to facebook are obviously the so called circles where you organize your friends. Stuff you then share can be shown to the public (like on twitter) or to selected circles (a bunch of contacts) or singly selected friends. To add friends or contacts to your circles you simply drag and drop them via Ajax into the designated circles. Checkboxes are [...]

Loudlee – social music network

While you’re all going crazy about (wooohooo, a picture sharing platform!) I happend to come across loudlee. Loudlee is a ‘social music network‘ that lets you add songs and artists to your library and follow people (like on pinterest :P) you like. So what’s new with that you might ask by now. And that’s a good question. In a time where there are already numerous ‘social music networks’ like last.fm, blip.fm, grooveshark or even stuff like spotify bringing out a start-up in this area sounds like ‘just another bs-shot-from-the-hip-project’. And yeah, well, it didn’t  invent the wheel again – but does it have too? Maybe improving the stuttering wheel is already enough. Compared to blip.fm it is, for example, wayyyy more stylish. The user interface is just cool, shows covers, artist pictures, etc and the embedded youtube videos are actually working (hello, blip.fm). Just like on last.fm – but compared to last.fm it rocks since there is no restriction regarding how many songs you can play (on last.fm I ran out of ‘free’ songs a long time ago – since then they always try to force me into a paid membership). If we take on grooveshark (which I actually happened [...]
