Head-fake Learning

The term head-fake learning is one of my favorites when it comes to discussions about teaching methodologies. The credit for this term goes unfortunately not to me but to one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to teaching and advice in all terms of mastering ones life, Randy Pausch. Randy considered head-fake learning as one of the most useful weapons in a teacher’s arsenal. Up to now I totally agree with this point of view and would like to discuss how you can implement headfake learning methods into everyday teaching. What is head-fake learning? Before talking about the implementation we have to define head-fake learning though. While I am not a big fan of fixed and casted in concrete definitions we at least need to know what we we are talking about. So ‘head-fake learning’ stands for the form of learning that is not obvious at first sight. Students think they are learning something about matter a but are, in fact, learning something about matter b. On a bigger scale this could even be a different subject or – on a meta level – about how to live life. Head-fake learning can be used in all different varieties and [...]

A new Notebook – do brands still matter?

4 years after buying my first Mac ever he decided it was time to put our relationship on a higher -well actually hotter – level. Due to the incredible amount of heat he produces right now (repair would cost as much as a new one) I thought it is about time to think of a new generation MacBook (pro). Now while writing and realizing that is really was 4 years ago when I bought my dear white fella I think it’s quite ok to buy a new one now. Living on the cloud When I started using my mac I swore to never ever go back to Windows operating computers and intend to leave it that way. Nevertheless, in a time where we live in a cloud, I wonder if the OS really is that important. After all, Big G(oogle) and many others offer us a huge variety of services online (even for free). Many of those services make programs like MS Word (or the Apple pendant iWork) redundant. I really love(d) my MacBook even though the Apple service itself sucks pretty much and there is almost no chance to ever get an answer on a non-paying way from Apple. [...]

Social Media & Education: Using Facebook for Teaching

Social Media is definitely a huge field with numerous possibilities to interact or getting started. However facebook somehow simply is the one network which is widely known as ‘the social network’ or even ‘the internet’. So it seemed quite reasonable for me to start my series ‘Using Social Media for Education‘ with facebook as first example. I simply assume that most of you know facebook and already are there (active or passive). If this isn’t the case please feel free to head over to my ‘Social Media Explained’ section and explore facebook’s possibilites in general. But enough with the preface, let us start with the conversation. However, before getting into examples and best practices, let us get rid of the thought that facebook is bad and the origin of all evil. I already discussed whether social media is good or bad in terms of teaching & studies, let’s not start this discussion again (if so, please in the comments section beneath the post mentioned above) and assume that facebook is not developed by the devil himself (even though I wouldn’t put my shirt on it – however it’s not the root of all evil). Here is a short informational graphic [...]

Mr. Guardiola tear down this wall

Welcome to one of the rare ‘sascha (yes, that’s how you spell my name, really) can’t keep his mouth shut’ posts that I decided to publish here on my website. Usually I don’t publish them, throw them away or post them elsewhere. However I became to lazy to maintain all those different web personas and thought I might post more personal stuff over here. Nevertheless there won’t be any relationship or dirty laundry posts coming up. If you’re now disappointed I can totally understand that. But don’t worry, you can see more dirty laundry here… Enough of the prequel now. Back to the matter at hand. One of the least important things on a global scale, nevertheless an important thing for everybody who doesn’t have any real problems: Football. Yesterday the semi-final of the most important club trophy, the Champions League, was held between the blaugrana matadors that are being paid by the FC Barcelona and the guys that played like fish & chips tastes. From the Stamford Bridge, the FC Chelsea. I’ve always been a supporter of Barca (FC Barcelona, for the ones who usually only click and get horny when there is something about Apple or Google in [...]

Tipp(‘s) Off – A story about Basketball, Business and Bullshit

This week the news spread all over the world (wide web) like a wildfire. The NBA Lockout is over! Players and officials have found an agreement and will settle their differences. We will see a short season (66 games) and it will start with an amazing triple-header on X-Mas day, December 25th. So hey, let’s celebrate. Basketballfans all over around the globe. The NBA’s back. Wooohoo wait a minute… Merry X-Mas everybody First I have to say that I am happy that we’ll be able to see some NBA action this season. For various reasons. One of them is that I’m happy to see my homie Dirk Nowitzki getting his Championship Ring in front of the eyes of ‘The King’ and his army the Miami Heat (Game number one this season: Mavs vs. Heat). Furthermore I am happy that Dirk (and some other older superstars) don’t have to play in shitty (sorry) leagues and ruin their game in order to fit in the European or Chinese style. And wouldn’t it be kinda sad to see the NBA Champion (again: and other superstars) playing for Bayreuth, Bamberg, Marbella or Chiangzu? So yeah, glad the NBA will be back. And man…on Christmas. 2 weeks backpacking | Thailand and Kuala Lumpur

Since the life of a teacher is a very hard and stressfull one (stop laughing!) it is more than logical that we have some weeks off from time to time. I spent the last 3 weeks on the road while backpacking across Thailand and Kuala Lumpur. Here are some of my higlights. Chiang Mai – Songkran Festival The first stop was in the north of Thailand in the most beautiful  [ Read More ]
